Afruibana reassured and reassured by the maintenance of the free movement of fruit with the EU

While nearly 90% of African banana production is destined for the European market, the European Commission’s Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) has announced that the free movement of goods and commodities will be maintained during the Covid-19 outbreak, Afruibana said in a statement Friday. “To date, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers that there is no evidence that food is a route or source of transmission of the disease.”

The association grouping several associations of fruit producers and exporters from Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Ghana takes this opportunity to recall its twofold priority: to ensure a continuous supply of quality bananas to distribution centers and to guarantee the health safety of workers in banana plantations, packing stations and the various African port sites.

“All strategic stocks (cartons, packaging & phytosanitary products) have been increased to mitigate any possible shortage in the coming weeks,” Afruibana says, calling on “companies downstream of the banana sector” to “adapt to this exceptional situation requiring efforts from all stakeholders in the value chain.”
